Cameroon
If you board a plane or ship flying any of the international routes and ask to be taken to the heart of Africa, do not be surprised to find yourself disembarking in Cameroon.
It is a beautiful country per se, situated opposite the middle portion of Brazil, on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. Bordered by six countries of which Nigeria is the most prominent neighbor,
Cameroon appears on maps like a heavily pregnant mother carrying a baby on her back. .
This peculiar geopolitical entity was created by accident and apportioned to Germany during the 1884 Berlin conference that carved up Africa.
Berlin treated German Kamerun as its treasured colony for thirty-two years until Great Britain and France captured the land during the First World War,
partitioned it into British Cameroons and French Cameroun, and then went on to lord it over the people for four decades. However,
they too were challenged by Cameroonian nationalists who campaigned for the divided territory’s reunification and self-rule. Today, English and French are the country’s official languages,
mirroring the dominance of the two Indo-European languages in Africa.
They say the gods have a design even in the most outrageous acts of mortals. If that is the case, then it also applies to Cameroon.
The country has defied so many odds in its history that the people now pride themselves with the saying that “Impossible isn’t a Cameroonian word.”
Renowned voices tend to call Cameroon “Africa in miniature”, not only because of its fanciful shape and turbulent history,
but also because of the physical and human aspects of its geography. It is the point in Africa where the East meets the West and where the North meets the South.
It is a country that features plains and mountains, plateaus and valleys, rivers and seas, lakes and waterfalls and other landmarks that mirror the rest of Africa.
The south is dominated by equatorial and tropical rainforests, the north is covered by Sahelian vegetation, and the middle portion of the country is graced with high savannah of mixed grassland and forest.
In fact, all the different flora and fauna in Africa can be found in this carelessly drawn triangle called Cameroon.
Sports & nature
Limbe Wildlife Centre :
Many zoos in Africa are depressing places, but the Limbe Wildlife Centre is a shining exception. Jointly run by the Ministry of the Environment and the primate charity Pandrillus,
it contains rescued chimpanzees, gorillas, drills and other primates, all housed in large enclosures, with lots of interesting information about local conservation issues.
Staff are well informed, and are heavily involved in community education.
Musée d'Art Camerounais :
At the Benedictine monastery on Mt Fébé, north of the city centre, the Musée d'Art Camerounais has an impressive collection of masks,
bronze- and woodwork and other examples of Cameroonian art. The chapel is also worth a look.
Espace Doual'art :
Well worth dropping into if you're nearby, this contemporary art space hosts changing displays of work from all over Cameroon and the rest of Africa.
There's a little cafe here too, and it's a good place to gauge the city's small art scene.
Palais Royal :
The must-see attraction of Foumban is the sultan's palace, currently home to the 19th sultan of the Bamoun dynasty.
It has a fascinating and well-organised museum containing previous sultans' possessions and great historical insight into the region – assuming you know French.
You'll find the palace opposite the market and main mosque, the minaret of which can be climbed as part of the palace tour.
Musée des Arts et Traditions Bamoun :
Close to the Village des Artisans, this museum houses a private collection of art and historical artefacts.
Mvog-Betsi Zoo :
This is one of the better zoos in West Africa, co-run by the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund (www.cwaf.org),
with a sizeable collection of native primates, rescued from poachers and the bushmeat trade.
Limbe Botanic Gardens :
The second-oldest botanical gardens in Africa are the home of, among others, cinnamon, nutmeg, mango, ancient cycads and an unnamed tree locals describe as 'African Viagra'.
There's a small visitors centre and an area with Commonwealth War Graves. Guides (CFA1000) aren't required but are recommended as labelling is minimal. Bring bug spray.
Culture and history info
Cameroon has 250-300 distinct groups, and an estimated 300+ languages. Cameroon is divided into several provinces, which are dominated by specific ethnic or religious groups. Ethnic divisions often correspond to geography, which is also widely varied. Religious differences often correspond to colonial or other historical influence.
Partly through the influence of colonialism, there is a national culture, and two distinct regional cultures: the Anglophone and Francophone regions, which primarily speak English and French and use different legal systems. The national culture is established through public institutions such as school, the multiparty political system, shared history of colonialism and a national love of football.
